The Period of PURPLE Crying is a new way to help parents understand this time in their baby's life, which is a normal part of every infant's development. It is confusing and concerning to be told your baby "has colic" because it sounds like it is an illness or a condition that is abnormal.
When the baby is given medication to treat symptoms of colic, it reinforces the idea that there is something wrong with the baby, when in fact, the baby is going through a very normal developmental phase. That is why we prefer to refer to this time as the Period of PURPLE Crying.
This is not because the baby turns purple while crying. The acronym is a meaningful and memorable way to describe what parents and their babies are going through breastfeeding or not.

The LactMed® database contains information on drugs and other chemicals to which breastfeeding mothers may be exposed.
It includes information on the levels of such substances in breastmilk and infant blood, and the possible adverse effects in the nursing infant. Suggested therapeutic alternatives to those drugs are provided, where appropriate. All data are derived from the scientific literature and fully referenced. A peer review panel reviews the data to assure scientific validity and currency.
It is common to need additional breastfeeding help when using medications, herbs and supplements. Book a lactation consultation to see where we can help!

Young children, especially infants, are vulnerable to food-borne illness. Babies can have difficulties fighting off infections because their immune systems are not yet fully developed.
Health Canada recommends breastfeeding your baby. Human milk is the best food for your baby. When a baby is not breastfed, liquid infant formula and powdered infant formula are acceptable alternatives.
Here is a great resource to help with the different types of formula available.
Also, please note that it is important to keep track of the brand of formula and the batch number in case of adverse reactions and recalls.

Basis (The baby sleep info source)
formerly Infant Sleep Info Source (ISIS)
The aim of Basis (the Baby Sleep Information Source) is to provide access to research based evidence about biologically normal infant sleep, in forms that are accessible to parents and health practitioners, supported by references to research relevant to families in the UK. We conceptualise ‘biologically normal infant sleep’ as being the sleep of babies who are exclusively or predominantly breastfed to at least 6 months of age and cared for in a responsive manner. We do not consider sleep training methods that require leaving babies alone for sleep in the first year of life to be biologically normal.
